ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi on Thursday said that Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with the European Union and that Pakistan-EU partnership was moving in right direction.
In a meeting with members of the European Parliament Amjad Bashir and Jan Zahradil, who called on him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fatemi appreciated the efforts of the Friends of Pakistan group in the European Parliament and thanked the MEPs for their continued support for Pakistan.
The European lawmakers appreciated the steps taken by the government of Pakistan for the protection and the promotion of human rights, especially the vulnerable segments of the society. Acknowledging the positive impact of government’s socio-economic policies, they assured their continued support for Pakistan in the European Parliament.
They also briefed the aide about the ongoing review of GSP Plus scheme in the European Parliament and expressed confidence that the review would lead to a positive outcome. They also conveyed their good wishes and expressed hope for complete and speedy recovery of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
On the occasion, Fatemi underlined the need for more frequent parliamentary exchanges between the two sides to strengthen the existing relationship. During the meeting, he briefed the MEPs about the policies of the government aimed at enhancing welfare and security of the people, generating economic growth and addressing the energy crisis.
He also apprised the European lawmakers of the measures adopted by the government for the promotion of human rights of all citizens.
